Mary Flora Bell

Mary Flora Bell was only 11 when she murdered two little kids. One of them was 4 year-old Martin Brown, who she enticed to the old house and then choked to death and the other 3 year-old Brian Howe also choked, but moreover mutilated with scissors.

Everyone in 1968 in England was shocked how little girl like Mary could do such terrible things. The cause of her distortion was found in her relationship with mother. She was a 17-year old prostitutte, who didn't care about her child and tried to kill it at least once, as the other members of the family say. Furthermore, Mary has never met her father and was sexually abused and beaten since the age of 5. Her way of dealing with this trauma was to transfer her anger into other kids, and that's why she abused them and was considered a problematic child. Another thing that pushed Mary in some way to commit murder was the fact she had a dominant personality and unusually high intelligence.  This skills helped her to persuade her friend Norma to kill with her.

Mary is an example of a rehabilitated murderer. In 1980 she was released from the house of correction for juvenile offenders. In 1984 she gave birth to her daughter and gave them new identity. A few years ago media annouced that she had become a grandmother. Of course, many people were angry that she was given a new life instead of having to deal with the conseqences and scornful looks at her everytime she leaves her house. I just wonder how could she look at her little daughter knowing she had murdered kid the same age 16 years ago. Also I belive this case would have been so different if she had been paid more attention by people around her.

  1. On the whole, this is a positive story, which undermines all appeals for stricter punishments for crimes. I wonder what he rehabilitation programme looked like - the 1960s Britain wasn't very progressive in the treatment of criminals so it would be interesting to know what they did with such kids.
