Cyprus urged to ban hunting at coast to protect flamingoes

Larnaca Salt Lake in Cyprus is a key stop for almost 15,000 flamingoes on the migration path from Africa to Europe. Everything was okey until January last year when governemnt's fauna serviced noticed tens losses of flamingoes. They died in the result of lead poisoning from shotgun pellets. To this day hunting for ducks was only allowed in the network's southern tip of the Salt Lake, but now conservationists in Cyprus are urging to expand a hunting ban, because even though using lead pellets is prohibited here, hunters don't care and still use them. As the result flamingoes eat residues of them and die.

I totally agree with poeple who say that hunting for ducks should be forbidden here at all. First of all, generally, killing these poor ducks isn't funny and I totally can't understand how it can be amusing to anyone, but I also understand that it couldn't be totally prohibited, because (unfortunatelly) many people treat it as a hobby. But now hunters don't follow the rules and don't respect the fact that they are disturbing the natural environment of flamingoes. This hunting ban would be a great lesson for them. If they can't take a deal, they won't get it at all. It is not that hard to understand that they are obligated to use steal pellets, instead of the lead ones.

  1. Clearly, Cyprus authorities can even enforce the laws they have introduced, like the ban on lead pellets. So even if they ban hunting altogether, it may not be effective.
